In response to the aging population in society, Taipei Medical University (TMU) established the School of Gerontology in 2007 with a view to developing talents for elderly care, senior health assessment and health care project design. To improve social interaction for elders who live alone or from disadvantaged backgrounds, Chang Yung-Fa Charity Foundation has been collaborating with TMU School of Gerontology since 2018 in the “Youths and Elders Dine Together: solitary elders need not dine alone” initiative in the nearby neighborhoods: Siwei Village, Hui’an Village and Sanzhang Village.

Long-term care for elders has become a prioritized issue in society in recent years. Through the Youths and Elders Dine Together initiative, the Foundation not only funds meals for disadvantaged elders but also pays the participating youths hourly fees. With the initiative in service for a number of years, many elders who would normally stay cooped up at home are now venturing out of their homes to enjoy a diversity of workshops and build up a precious neighborly relationship in the neighborhood.

On September 5, the Chang Yung-Fa Charity Foundation accompanied by TMU College of Nursing Dean Zhou Gui-Ru and TMU Dean of Academic Affairs Lin Qiu-Fen visited the Sanzhang Village long-term care station to check out their fitness, muscle strength training and DIY workshops and gifted each participant with one box of Mid-Autumn Festival moon cakes. The elders were very happy to receive the moon cakes and the TMU students, with their hard work and diligent studies, are bound to become a future key force in the long-term care sector.

The participating TMU students said that they were thankful for the Foundation’s sponsorship of this initiative which helps the elders get out of their house to engage in healthy aging activities and allows the students internship opportunities that are conducive to future employment.
