“Be Your Wings” — Chang Yung-Fa Charity Foundation Helps “Flying” Boys Conquer Kinmen by Unicycle

Fifteen youths from Hualien’s Faith, Hope & Love Youth Academy embarked on a five-day, four-night unicycle challenge in Kinmen on February 5th. Supported by the Chang Yung-Fa Charity Foundation, this journey aimed to help them push their limits and reach new milestones. Since 2006, the academy has introduced unicycle training to guide youths from dysfunctional families or troubled backgrounds, fostering patience and resilience.
The event kicked off on the 6th with a unicycle challenge on Little Kinmen, starting from the Kinmen Bridge. To avoid the midday heat, the children set off at 6 a.m., but the sweltering weather still left them drenched in sweat. The rough and uneven terrain required them to exert extra effort to control the balance of their unicycles, presenting challenges at every turn. Their focused riding attracted the attention of many passersby, who even cheered them on.
Chang Yung-Fa Charity Foundation Chairman Daniel Wu emphasized that learning to ride a unicycle mirrors life—every fall and step forward builds determination and perseverance, crucial for these youths in need of positive achievements. Academy Executive Secretary Chen Long-Quan noted that this experience helped them develop resilience and confidence, transforming them from “delinquent boys” into “flying boys.”
Since 2017, the Foundation has supported the academy’s character-building programs, integrating sports like unicycling, running, cycling, and judo to instill positive values. Additionally, it has collaborated with EVA Air to provide marathon opportunities, encouraging these youths to dream big and challenge themselves. This Kinmen journey was not just a physical challenge but a life-changing experience, teaching them to overcome obstacles and embrace their future with courage.
