Volunteer For a Day: Helping the Disadvantaged Clean and Repair Home Environment
The Heng-Shan Social Welfare Foundation was established in 2010 to offer therapies that combine body and mind and resources to serve people with mental illness, support them to lead normal lives, and promote public awareness and de-stigmatization of mental illnesses. The Chang Yung-Fa Charity Foundation sponsors operating funds to help with case services, home repair missions, food banks, etc. The Food Bank is located in downtown Taichung and provides free supplies to families with physical and mental disabilities to ease their financial burden. The charitable organization has more than forty team leaders across Taiwan, who coordinate volunteer manpower to assist in home repairs for individuals with disabilities. Their efforts have received enthusiastic responses from the public.
Mr. Chuang is a 39-year-old man residing in Bali, New Taipei City. He is divorced and has an 8-year-old daughter. He works in electronic soldering, but his job income is not stable. He suffers from schizophrenia and holds a major disability certificate. He has a history of compulsory medical treatment but is currently stable on medication and has good emotional control. He is under the supervision and follow-up of the local health clinic. The residence is a self-owned house, which is the ancestral home of the family. It is a red brick bungalow located in a remote area surrounded by factories. The house is in a dilapidated condition with walls showing signs of wear and tear. There are scattered debris and garbage in various places, making the overall environment dirty and untidy.
Led by Chairman Wu Ching-Ming and a team of over 10 colleagues, the Foundation joined forces with Heng-Shan Social Welfare Foundation to assist the Chuang family in cleaning and repairing their house. This effort significantly improved the environmental hygiene and safety of the place. The hardworking volunteers were treated to exquisite meal boxes as a token of appreciation, conveying warmth and support from society. Mr. Chuang expressed his gratitude for everyone's help, and he will cherish and keep it clean in the future to give his children a normal living environment.
